The board voted unanimously to sell Juan Linn Elementary School buildings and two parking lots. DeTar Healthcare System bid $700,000 for the buildings on the corner of East Colorado Street. Dennis Caka offered a total of $27,000 for the two parking lots. The money will go into the district's general fund and will be applied to moving the elementary students to the former Crain Middle School.

The board unanimously approved a new mascot and school colors for William Wood Elementary School. Students and community members voted to change the mascot from "Winners" to "Aviators" and make the new school colors red, white and blue.

  • OUTERWEAR DEFINED

Outerwear, defined as anything worn over the standardized dress, such as, but not limited to, hoodies, jackets and coats, must be solid and may contain logos/trademarks no longer than two inches. No graphics (other than school logos or graphics) or camouflage is allowed. Trench coats and any other outerwear deemed by administration to be a distraction or potential safety hazard will not be permitted. Former letter jackets from MHS are allowed.

Campus administration has the authority to impose additional standards for outerwear and may require students to remove their outerwear while in the building if those standards are not met.

Victoria school district students can keep their wardrobes intact for next year.

The school board Thursday night approved the 2011-12 dress code, which doesn't make any major changes to the code enacted this school year.

"I think we've come a long way to get to this point. (The dress code) is one of the most positive changes that's taken place in VISD in the last couple of years," said board member Lou Svetlik.

Discussion at the board's regular meeting focused mostly on clarifying and simplifying the wording of the dress code to make it more easily and uniformly enforced.

Assistant Superintendent Nancy McCord told the board most of the discrepancies administrators noticed the past year centered on outerwear.

The revised dress code spells out but does not limit what can be deemed outerwear and grants campus administration the authority to impose additional standards.

After some discussion, the board settled on adding the word "solid" to its outerwear requirements and specifically outlawing camouflage.

Board member Michael DiSanto brought up the lingering concern of whether kids with camouflage jackets would be required to purchase new ones.

The board clarified that students can wear any type of clothing up to the doors of the school.

"It's not requiring you to buy another coat for cold weather because you don't need the camouflage coat in the building," Board President Tami Keeling said. "The goal is to have even enforcement. This is all about what's inside the building."

McCord said she and other district members have been conceptualizing a dress code for secondary students for about four or five years.

The one-page set of standards has been simplified from longer drafts and is the culmination of input from administrators, the board, staff and the community.

The board voted 5-1 to approve the dress code, with Estella De Los Santos opposing and Kevin VanHook absent.

De Los Santos said she has been opposed to the district implementing a dress code from the beginning.

Members of the board said establishing a dress code for elementary students isn't on the horizon, as complaints about wardrobe from those schools are minimal.

  • I have a question about a zippered hoodie...I bought one for each of my daughters. These were plain black but we had their names monogrammed on the back (not in Old English). They were told they couldn't wear them because the lettering was more than 2 inches. Also, numerous times when I visited the East campus, the student workers, at the front desk, were out of dress code.

  • UNIFORMS, and we aren't even discussing this issue. And people wionder why these families are bailing out of here at such an alarming rate. Industrial is looking real good about now.

  • I don't mind the dress code too much except for hoodies and jackets. We live in south Texas and we don't have a long winter so I don't buy new coats every year for my kids. My kids are very well behaved and they are all in High School. They obey the dress code. Also if they can wear whatever jacket to the front door but not beyond where are they supposed to keep it? They don't have lockers and their bagpacks are full of books.

  • West has enforced it......East not at all. Come on VISD...if administrators at East and Profit won't do their jobs...get new ones.

  • If people think that the dress code for this year was complied with, please take a few minutes and go over to the what was Profit High School around 11:30 AM and you will see that is is not being complied with. The place to go is where the kids are waiting for the buses. If these kids are wearing belts with their clothes they are wearing those belts very low.

  • "McCord said she and other district members have been conceptualizing a dress code for secondary students for about four or five years." Seriously!?! 4 or 5 years!?! No wonder our public school system is so bad.

I for one am glad to see that our elected school board officials are using their time wisely. Concentrating on important issues like whether or not a hoodie should be solid, tucked or untucked, camo jackets, logo size, etc.

When you have a bunch of clowns running the show, it stands to reason that it will be a joke.

    Nice going.

  • When I drive my children to school...all of the kids look really nice. I really am for the dress code.
