It's time to clean the beaches again. The Texas General Land Office has scheduled its 25th annual Spring Adopt-a-Beach Clean-up on Saturday.

This is an all-volunteer effort to remove the trash from Texas beaches and waterways. The land office has held two clean ups a year since the program was created in 1986 as a way to increase public awareness about marine debris and beach litter.

Since the program's creation in the fall 1986 when more than 2,800 volunteers picked up 124 tons of trash, more than 406,000 volunteers have removed 7,900 tons of trash from Texas beaches.

The spring clean-up is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Meet-up locations are along the coast.

Volunteers are advised to wear sunscreen, shoes, sunglasses and a hat, and to bring plenty of drinking water and mosquito repellant.
