Andy Martinez III loved slingshots.

"He made them himself, ever since we were kids," said Martinez's daughter, Vera Martinez. "I don't know what it was about them. It was just something he loved to do."

A mechanic who retired from Alcoa, Martinez, 66, died Tuesday at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He had been hospitalized since a mobile home fire on Coleto Drive on March 1.

The fire began after brush Martinez was burning spread to the trailer, said Ron Pray, Victoria County fire marshal.

His daughter said Martinez did well for about four days after being taken off a ventilator, even beginning therapy to help regain his strength.

"One day, they even took him down the hall to let him look out the window at San Antonio," she said.

But things took a turn for the worse about three weeks ago for the Vietnam War veteran.

His organs, including his lungs, began to fail, said his daughter.

"I sat with him Monday night until about 2 in the morning," Vera said. "He still could hear us and understand what we were saying."

Martinez, the father of three, also had nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He also leaves behind his wife, Maria Martinez.

The family made the decision Tuesday morning to remove Martinez from life support.

"He was a God-fearing man, first and foremost," his daughter said. "He was kind and generous with a loving and caring heart. He would give his last dime to a stranger."
