"Dumb & Dumber" tuxedos
Carol Castaneda said that Al's Formal Wear gets two or three requests for "Dumb & Dumber" tuxedos each year. She said that with Nathan Budd and Ricky Redus that this was the first time the store has ever gone out of its way to get the tuxedos for someone.
The tuxedos came from www.brightcolortuxedos.com
Ricky got his in two weeks, while Nathan got his in six days. Each tuxedo costs $240 to purchase or $186 to rent.
Nathan Budd and Ricky Redus look like a couple of idiots, and they're OK with that.
"We're the kind of people where we really don't care," Nathan said.
How else can you explain two Industrial High School seniors dressing up as the biggest goofballs in film history for their prom Saturday night? The characters in question are Lloyd and Harry from "Dumb & Dumber" as portrayed by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in 1994.
Like their movie counterparts, the two 18-year-olds are dressing up in vintage-style tuxedos complete with top hats, canes and bright colors - baby blue and tangerine, the kind of colors you would find in a costume shop and not usually in a tuxedo store.
"My mom said, 'You should probably think about your date and think how embarrassed she'd be,'" said Ricky, who will be dressed as Lloyd and had to convince his date to go along with the idea.
And what do people think about the guys' attire?
Carol Castaneda, assistant manager for Al's Formal Wear, thought it would make for a fun and exciting prom date. She helped the guys order their outfits for $186 from another company and didn't charge them for pressing it.
"I thought it was really funny," said Summer Donahoo, a sophomore at Victoria West High School and Nathan's date.
Summer will be wearing a light sky blue dress, the closest colored blue she could find to match Nathan.
Will the guys go all out in their mimicking? Well, Nathan isn't sure if he will wear a blonde wig to make him look more like Harry. And Ricky is definitely not going to get a bowl-shaped haircut like Lloyd's.
The two still hope to shock their classmates at their prom in Edna.
In a way, it's an ending to a loud and funny era that began when Nathan moved to Vanderbilt in 2005.
"That's when we got really stupid," Nathan said jokingly.
Nathan said that he and Ricky, who lives in Inez, don't have a lot to do in their hometowns, so they entertain themselves.
But with graduation just around the corner and the two best friends set to go their separate ways, their days of always hanging out together are about to end for at least some time.
Both said they'll keep in touch and for now are more focused on their latest adventure, especially since they haven't told that many people about their prom attire.
Ricky said, "They're going to be like, 'Wow.'"
