Editor's Note: Two seats on the Victoria School Board have challengers. To help readers learn more about the candidates, we conducted a question and answer session with each one. Today the candidates for District 3 speak.

Name: Lou Svetlik

Age: 54

City of residence: Victoria

Occupation: Chemical process operator - E.I. DuPont (31 Years) and owner/operator of Center Line Aero of Victoria

Why will you make a good asset to the district as a member of the school board?

I feel that I can continue to be an asset to VISD as an elected board member due to the energy and commitment that I have demonstrated as an effective member of the board of trustees. Not too long ago, the board needed leadership with strong ties to the conservative family values that our community represents. I feel that I have filled that role, from the perspective of a caring and involved parent, and while maintaining constant interaction and dialogue with community members. Through utilizing community input and demonstrating effective communication skills, the board has worked together to implement many significant and positive changes that have set the stage for our children's success and for the future of our vibrant and growing community.

What is the most serious issue facing the school board?

The most serious issue facing the school board is the upcoming district budget process and addressing the state funding reductions. Over the past several years, the board and superintendent have work hard to ensure that VISD has a sound fiscal foundation so that we can weather these types of challenges. This budget process will likely demand all of the skills and experience our board, superintendent and administrative team can provide to continue a quality school system, while minimizing any negative impact to our students. I feel that my experience as senior member of the board will be an asset in these deliberations. In these economic times, raising the local tax rate is not an option.

What are your ideas to handle the state's budget cuts to education, and how will you ensure students still maintain a quality education?

The best manner in which to address the state education budget reductions is to utilize the energy and experience of our entire VISD team in an extensive effort to aggressively minimize what does not impact student learning and development. The district has been actively working to address adequate staffing in personnel, potential for out-sourcing for certain services, and utility usage. Our maintenance department has been doing many repairs and renovations in-house, saving budget dollars. I feel that my experience and positive working relationships within VISD will be an asset through the upcoming budget process.
