  • Using some of the emotional arguments presented posted here I could also justify removing stoplights at all intersections by petition and public vote. Thankfully public safety laws are not subject to public review.

  • They don't want a vote held because they know their revenue scam program will not pass a public vote. The people are smarter than the corrupt Port Lavaca leaders.

  • Thank you to Mr Baugh! He is a true patriot. This isn't a port lavaca thing or even a Texas thing, this is a nationwide voter revolt that pits average citizens against the corrupt money grabbing cities and camera corporations. If you all think the cameras are so great and popular why not help get it to the ballot? Let's have a vote!

  • myvu,

If someone is going to run a redlight and kill someone then it'll happen regardless of whether or not a red light camera is there. Do you think people run redlights thinking "Oh, let me kill that person over there!" No, they're ACCIDENTS. Accidents where you hit another car is most likely going to happen after the light has been red long enough for traffic to begin moving into the intersection....not when it barely turns red...use some common sense! Instead of these cars slamming their brakes and skidding into the intersection (which I've seen) when the light has BARELY turned red they could have safely crossed....did they pass a red light? Yeah. But, but its safer in my opinion than slamming the breaks, and causing an even bigger accident.

Once again, if it was about safety Dallas would have kept their red light cameras on.

  • @redrage- you have no idea where any of the posters here live. For all we know, you may be the mayor of Victoria. I wasn't aware there was a safe period to go thru a red light as you indicated. Tell that to the family of the person you kill someday while doing that. And if all you have to do is throw the ticket away, then do it and quit whining about the whole situation.

  • I just verified with Calhoun County Judge that the county is not participating in this scam. The County is NOT holding people's registrations for not paying red light SCAMERA tickets so our advise to all is do not pay these ILLEGAL red light camera tickets. Just be sure to register your vehicle at the coutyhouse or by mail and you will have no problems from chosing to NOT allow the City of Port Lavaca to scam you out of $75 bucks.

  • When I read this article online above the article was an advertisement by the Texas Traffic Safety Coalition about how running red lights is dangerous(which we know). The point being this coalition is funded by Redflex so apparently it is time to start questioning the Advocates objectivity. Are the really unbiased when the camera company is now funding THEM?

  • I love how people who have never lived in cities with redlight cameras like to make comments like they know what they're talking about, especially Victorians who seem to know everything on this board.

I lived in Dallas for 3.5 years and they did have redlight cameras at one point. I never received a ticket, but from my observations they seemed to cause more accidents than prevent them....people slamming on their brakes to avoid passing the light during that FIRST second that it turns red (like someone else posted below)......when they could have gone through safely....it causes people behind you to slam on their brakes, etc.

Dallas cut off their red light cameras because it was costing more than what they were generating in revenue. If it was about safety they would have left them on.

And carl9133 is right....You do not have to pay the ticket. It's a civil matter. You could simplyl just trash it if you want to, and that is what a lot of people do lol

  • Solution is simple: run red light + get caught = pay fine.

  • Thirdcoastsurfer,
Your comment sounds like as if it were written coming from a typical politician since #1- must know something about the long green light in my case.
#2- I am acting in the people's favor since I had a legally certified petition denied by our elected officials. They do work for the people. It's when our elected officials don't do the will of the people and totally ignore their voice is when injustice must be brought to light.
#3- no one said anything about conspiracies, just telling facts. Facts such as delaying the petition process, lying about placing a valid petition before the people to be voted on,working with a for profit corporation (redflex) to bypass the will of the people, the fact that this red light camera program has nothing to do with safety but revenue and telling people that the cameras aren't making any money. If they weren't making money then they wouldn't be up.The over 100 thousand dollars in the cities funds is a testament to that. I can go on and on. So, peace be with you :)

  • Mr Baugh,

A few suggestions from a fellow citizen of Port Lavaca...

    1) Slow down when entering an intersection where the light has been green for a long period. Cover the brake well before etering the intersection.
    2) Please understand that you are not acting in the public's best interest only your own selfish motives.
    3) There is no conspiracy at city hall only a resentment you cannot let go of that is a waste of your talents.

    Peace be with you...

  • Safety and civil rights not withstanding, think about where the money goes and who receives the lions share. If the city gets less than 70% there may be a hidden agenda. Follow the money.

  • Still so many uniformed people out there. Red light cameras in ALL independent studies have been PROVEN to increase accidents. Studies such as this and the ones done by another special interest group the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ALWAYS give a positive report for the cameras cause. People get with it. Engineering enhancments at intersections is the only proven means to fix the problem. Do you all know that a majority of the tickets are issued in the FIRST SECOND of the light turning red, the first second when there are NO accidents....most of the accidents are occurring 5 seconds into the light turining red. So we are generating all the revenue from the people that are not causing the problems PLUS there are NO ACCIDENTS from people not stopping 100% at the white line for three seonds before turning right BUT there are many ticket issued for those cases. IT is a huge money drive and if you dont believe it ask why AFTER the Houston election all we heard about was the lost revenue and how the city would make it up....nothing was ever said about safety....cause it aint about safety and even Los Angeles recently saw this and took these damm devices out of that city.....WAKE UP people!!!!!!!

    August 3, 2011 at 1:52 p.m.
  • Also just so everyone knows that this is a civil violation and you don't have to pay the ticket. There is absolutely nothing the city can do to make you pay the fine. Visit my FB page PORT LAVACA CITIZENS AGAINST RED LIGHT CAMERAS for more info and can ask questions which will be answered promptly.

    Thanks!
    Carl

  • Well for the uninformed who like to spout off without the facts...This is Mr Baugh and if you would learn to read a little or do any investigations on your own you would realize that this red light cameras have nothing to do with safety but revenue. If that was the case they would had allowed a perfectly legal petition by the people to be placed up for a vote. I especially love the stupid argument that most people make that are for the cameras that " if you don't run the red light you wont get a ticket". Wow Sherlock do you work for the police force? Well for the most famous one well "Mr. Baugh is just trying to get out of a ticket". BREAKING NEWS! I already went to court and had it dismissed because it was not purposely run. For the ones that say i have been going on about this forever, Your dam right! I don't plan on stopping until they are gone. If the elected officials actually would do what the people elected them into office for we would have already brought this issue up for a vote. Why might you ask they have not done this? Because in every vote that ever was they had been voted out by the people and for some stupid reason the city of PL didn't decide to put an out clause in the contract and will be held liable for the money owed. OOPs did i say money owed i thought we were talking about safety? Well just thought i would enlighten the ones that think they know so much. Next time bring a lunch! :P

  • i say shoot them red lights down i hate those redlights i will be sighning that paper wheres a pen and all of those say pay them tickets just wait til you pass them lights you will be pissed off too

  • The City of Port Lavaca hasn't received any fines in a while. Drivers realized they can't get away with running red lights so violations are down. Our streets are safer now than ever before!

    August 2, 2011 at 8:09 a.m.
  • Familyman. I agree. He's been going on forever about this. And it is because he got a ticket and couldn't get out of it. If you get a ticket, you broke the law! Why do so many people have problems with that? If people quit breaking the law, there would be no revenue! And then the city would want the cameras down because they would be losing money paying for them.

    August 2, 2011 at 6:26 a.m.
  • They really think we are that stupid to believe it's not about revenue?

    August 2, 2011 at 6:18 a.m.
  • I am for the Cameras! If you don't make a mistake while driving then you won't get a ticket. If you run a red light then you deserve a ticket! What is it about the idea the you don't understand. The way I see it is that one guy got a ticket and got mad at the system that caught him now he wants to get rid of the reason he got the ticket.
Baugh close your mouth and open your wallet and pay the ticket every time you get one and take a defensive driving training program. You don't get you way all the time. Grow up!

    August 2, 2011 at 4:29 a.m.
  • If it was not about money, the revenues after expenses from the fines would be sent to Washington to pay down the national debt.

    August 2, 2011 at 12:03 a.m.
  • IF the report this paper is refering to is by TTI, than BE AWARE THAT IT WAS WRITEEN BY WALDEN, a person who in 2008 MADE A SIMILAR CLAIM ON A OTHER TTI "REPORT"! IT WAS UNDERMINDED by the HOUSTON REPORT!
