Art Corner: Victoria Art League's classes starting soon
By Bill Bauer
It's August already and summer is winding down. I'm sure ready for the cool weather again but looks like that may be a while.
The hot weather didn't keep 47 5 to 19 year olds from coming and participating in creating posters for the film "Roundball" that Anthony Pedone is shooting in Victoria. The Advocate had a nice write up about this project.
A segment of the film was shot on our patio with some of the participants used as extras. It was very gratifying to see so much activity and creativity going on in our building.
Michelle Evans finished her children's classes this month and would like to continue creating opportunities for our young artists. She is planning to continue teaching elementary students once a week after school. These classes will start the week of Aug. 22. One class will be on Monday, one on Tuesday and one on Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. for art including drawing, painting in different media and pastels. Wednesday (third grade on up) will be pottery and will cover pinch pots, coil, slab and sculpture.
Each class is limited to eight students per class. The cost will be $10 yearly registration fee, non-refundable, and a one-time supply fee of $15. The cost will be $44 per month, which includes the building use fee. If interested send your check to Michele Evans, 407 Monterrey St., Victoria 77904.
Sonny Timme is continuing his classes on Wednesdays, one afternoon class and one night. He teaches a variety of media, so if you are interested in trying something new, call him for more details at 361-578-8722.
Jim Feig will teach two beginning photography classes from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Sept. 6 or Sept. 8. Call 361-576-0578 for more information.
I will offer two beginning pottery classes starting Sept. 12 one from 1 to 4 p.m. and the other from 6 to 9 p.m. Call 361-649-8309 for more details.
Well known artist Dalhart Windberg will teach a workshop in oil painting in November so reserve your place soon if interested. Call the Art League at 361-572-0825 for more information on any of these classes or workshops. We will have our Market Day/Bazaar on Nov. 12, this year and are excited about all the activities that will entail.
I know there are some of you out there who would like to try or pursue art but feel you don't have the time. Life just kind of gets in the way. Besides classes, we have groups who get together to create at a certain time during the week. I have found that the only way I can find time to work on my art is if I have a certain time set aside to do my art.
We are renewing our memberships for this year so think about joining us.
The yearbook will go to print soon so make sure your membership is in so you can be a part of this publication.
Let me encourage all to plug into activities here at the Art League and become an integral part of making the arts come alive in Victoria.
Bill Bauer is president of the Victoria Art League.
