Kiosk opens school, county Internet access

Visitors to the Dr. Pattie Dodson Public Health Center now have fast access to information on their child's school, emergency communications, county government, and public schools with an Internet kiosk.
The kiosk is a part of the outreach of Victoria school district to allow patrons greater access to the information available on the VISD website.
"We know not every parent has Internet access in their home or where they work," Superintendent of Schools Bob Moore said. "And yet, there is a wealth of information on our website that can help the parents be more involved and understanding of their child's education. We are working to put that information at their fingertips in a convenient setting with an easy-to-master touch screen computer system."
The kiosk does not provide unlimited Internet access as the user is limited to the VISD and Victoria County sites.
Visitors to the kiosk will find on-screen instructions as they approach the bright yellow computer. The touch screen allows the visitor to select the VISD or County website. From that point, the visitor simply touches the screen or double taps the screen on the feature they wish to follow.
Parents who wish to sign in to the "Parent Gradebook" to monitor their child's attendance and progress should establish an account prior to visiting the kiosk. The school's staff can assist with that process at the time of registration in August or during one of the open houses set for early in the school year.
The parent may tap on the word "keyboard" at the bottom of the touch screen to open the touch screen key board. The parent can then log in to the Gradebook account. The connection to the Gradebook will be secure, but parents should remember to 'log-out' at the completion of their session.
The Parent Gradebook will be activated in early September for the 2011-12 school year.
Visitor's to the Victoria County website will be able to access information on county government, in addition to emergency weather information, area maps, property taxes, and other important data.
"We appreciate Victoria County hosting this kiosk site for the community to utilize," Moore said. "Under this arrangement, VISD has supplied the kiosk and the county is providing the Internet access and location for the kiosk. The community comes out ahead in this arrangement by having access to important information in a secure location within walking distance and transit availability for many of our families."
