Caterpillar representatives never approached Matagorda County

Aug. 11, 2011 at 3:11 a.m.

Dear Editor,

I am responding to a statement in a Letter to the Editor by Ms. Carol McMain in your August 4th edition.  Ms. McMain indicated that Caterpillar had explored locating a plant in Matagorda County that it was turned away by Matagorda County, and it is now under construction in Victoria.

Neither the Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation, Bay City Community Development Corporation, Bay City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture nor the Palacios Economic Development Corporation were ever approached by Caterpillar representatives about locating a plant in Matagorda County.  If we had been, we would certainly have worked very aggressively to have them locate here.

If it was a prospect inquiry sent out from the Governor’s Office to local economic development offices, such inquiries never name the company. They only give the company’s site and utility requirements.   We try very hard to match any inquiry or prospect we get with a possible site in Matagorda County.  We would never turn away a prospect like Caterpillar if we had a site that came close to matching its needs.  If Caterpillar approached anyone else in the county, we are not aware of that fact.

Owen Bludau

Executive Director

Matagorda County Economic Development Corporation
