BRYAN - For the first time in their three-year Texas Collegiate League history, the Victoria Generals won't be going to the playoffs.
The defending league champions saw their reign come to an end in a 3-2 loss to the Brazos Valley Bombers before a crowd of 1,832 on Thursday night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark.
The Bombers swept the two-game series to claim the league's fourth and final playoff spot.
They will host the East Texas Pump Jacks on Friday in the first game of a best-of-three series.
The Generals finished the season with an overall record of 28-31.
Brazos Valley took advantage of some control problems by Victoria starter Blake Denman to score a run in the first inning on a walk, a hit batsman, a bunt single and a walk.
The Generals captured the lead in the third inning.
Jake Runte walked, went to second on a groundout by Chad Kruse and scored on a single by Freddy Villalobos. Ryan Dalton doubled to score Villalobos.
The Bombers tied the game in the sixth inning on a RBI double by Brennya Smith.
Denman walked Kevin Wirth to lead off the seventh inning and was relieved by Jordan Harrison.
Wirth moved to second on a sacrifice by Herbert Romero and to third on a flyout by Scott Arthur before scoring the decisive run on a single by Trey Porras.
Dalton went 2 for 4 with a triple and a double for the Generals.
Victoria reliever Covey Morrow pitched the ninth inning to set a league record with his 30th appearance of the season.
Villalobos finished the season with 40 RBI one short of the league record. Kruse set league records with 77 hits and 237 at-bats.
