Volunteers help 'Pack the Bus'
H-E-B hosted "Pack the Bus" to try and collect school supplies for VISD students. For families in need, contact the parent liaison at their child's school anytime between tomorrow and Aug. 22.
WHAT TO DO
If you're a parent who needs assistance. Please contact the parent liaison at your school between Sunday and Aug. 22.
Angela Torres greeted everyone with a smile as they walked through the H-E-B doors.
She was happy to volunteer for the Pack the Bus initiative. It was only one year ago when she needed help with her own children.
Torres didn't have the financial means to buy her daughter, Angel, a belt, which was part of the school dress code. And she was disciplined for it.
"She needs to be getting an education, not staying in detention," said her concerned mother.
Torres said Kidz Connection helped her right away.
This year, the single mother wanted to return the favor and help others, so she was one of 40 volunteers. The premise is to help children in need get basic school supplies.
Mary Jean Seiler, of Kidz Connection, pleaded with the community to donate everything it can. She said, "what's the harm in buying a package of pencils or a notebook."
Torres didn't mind working both days of theback-to-school drive.
She said customers have been fairly polite and generous. But she was a little bothered when someone told her people need to get their own school supplies.
The mother of three still kept a smile on her face. With her soft voice she said, "Until you walk in these shoes you really can't understand."
