WHAT: "Meet the Warriors" Pep rally for Victoria West High School
WHEN: 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22
WHERE: Memorial Stadium, Victoria
Matthew Salazar hasn't been bitten by the school spirit bug yet - partly because he doesn't want the summer to end.
His mother encouraged him to attend the "Unleash the Titans" rally Saturday to get pumped for the new year.
The all-school pep rally for Victoria East High School had hundreds of fans. The Memorial Stadium was flooded with black, red, and gold. As the sun set Saturday evening, the excitement began to rise.
On Aug. 22, Matthew will leave behind the comfort of Stroman Middle School. His group of friends will be divided between the East and the West. But there's no bad blood with this 15-year-old student.
"We'll still be cool," he said.
Fred Wallace, president of the football boosters, said he was delighted the rally honors more than athletics.
He said, "It's awesome."
Matthew came by himself, but made new friends such as Kendall Mayberry.
The incoming freshman's calm demeanor changes when he talks about soccer. He's been playing since the sixth grade and hopes to make the team this year.
Matthew seemed to be enjoying himself, although he didn't verbally express it.
Raymond Yancey said the incoming freshmen bring a new energy to the school. He is a 17-year-old rising senior. People driving down Miori Lane could hear resonating sounds of fans.
"There's a lot of Titan pride here," Raymond said.
