Ganado fooball second in Class 1A preseason high school poll

A week before the season kicks off, a handful of teams from the Crossroads have the state abuzz after being ranked in the Associated Press Texas high school football preseason poll.

Ganado received the most first place votes in Class 1A, but will start the season ranked second behind Canadian. In Class 2A, perennial power Refugio is ranked fourth, while Schulenburg is in a tie with Idalou at No. 7.

Ganado football coach Jimmy Thompson heard through the grapevine that his team might be ranked that high, but those rumors were not confirmed until Thursday.

Thompson said starting tight end Austin Lawrence transferred to Falls City in the offseason because his father took a position on the coaching staff. He added Thomas Parks has a chance to win that position. Regardless of who is the Indians second tight end, Thompson said his team is more concerned with the final state rankings - not the preseason poll.

"I think that's why we are ranked high," Thompson said about his team's 17 returning starters. "We feel like we had a successful year last year although we didn't accomplish all our goals. We're excited about it, but all it is is something for everyone to talk about right now."

Calhoun and Shiner received votes, but were not ranked, in the respective 4A and 1A poll. However, the Sandcrabs might soon be ranked if they can defeat Corpus Christi Calallen in their season opener. The Wildcats are not ranked, but received five more votes in the preseason poll than Calhoun.

"We've talked about it since Day 1, it's just words on paper," said Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker in a conversation earlier this month. "When people talk about predictions, or where you are ranked, that means absolutely nothing. The thing that matters is when you step on the field Friday night. Right now this offense, this defense and this kicking game haven't done anything."
