County agrees to fire department contract fee

The Victoria County judge backed off on his request that the city pay more for fire department services next year.

The Victoria Fire Department provides services to the county through a contract with the city. The contract calls for the county to pay the city 14.5 percent of the department's budget, usually about $1.5 million in previous years.

However, the contract's price tag rose to $1.65 million for 2012.

Judge Don Pozzi wanted that lowered to $1.5 million for 2012 and $1.25 million for 2013. If the city refused, Pozzi told the Victoria City Council on Tuesday, "We are going to look for other options for 2013. We have plenty of time to do that."

However, City Manager Charmelle Garrett told the council on Thursday that Pozzi agreed to pay the $1.65 million. This occurred during a meeting that Garrett and Mayor Will Armstrong had with Pozzi, Garrett said.

Pozzi said Friday the county wouldn't look for other options before he negotiates another contract with the city for 2013. The contract negotiations were scheduled for October.
