Two men were arrested by the Victoria County Sheriff's Office about 11:30 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of stealing a white mini-van from McAdams Floral shop and submerging it in the 1800 block of Fordyce Road, near Saxet Lake Park.

Sgt. Justin Marr, of the sheriff's office, did not know when the vehicle was reported stolen, but said the van went missing within 24 hours of the vehicle sinking in the lake.

"A witness saw the van floating on the water and called the Victoria police," Marr said.

The men, who were arrested near the scene, were seen walking from the boat ramp shortly after the van entered the water.

Simon Lucio Lerma, 17, and Armando Ray Garza, 19, both of Victoria, were arrested and charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, according to a sheriff's office report.

The van was submerged under about 10 feet of water.

Marr said a dive team would likely have to assist with retrieving the vehicle, which could be as early as Sunday.

No injuries were reported at the scene.

  • I have no idea why your comment was deleted. Truth is, there is a heavy concentration of workers in our local food industry. If people are so intent on running every illegal worker out of Texas they best be ready to learn to do do for themselves what we pay others to do for us.

  • Vet, Vet... in case you didn't know I was being sarcastic about your comment about the moulton incident where 20 "illegals" jumped out and ran from the police. You stated that they weren't "evil doers", just probably on their way to do the work no American wants to do. Why was my comment deleted?? Just stating the facts!!

  • Ah Ha. One poster thinks everyone that steals a car is doing it to get to work to produce food. Maybe, but not many food producers near the lake. Have to go north of Victoria around Moulton, Gonzales, Nixon, Yoakum and other places our food is produced. But I think I know how she would make that error. Hard to see much looking through a tunnel.
