Life at its best: Walk in light of God's word

In Psalm 19, King David says that God's Word is worth more than pure gold. Now, if I placed a pot of pure gold on one side of you and a Bible on the other, which would you grab? I think I know what the majority would choose. But many of us haven't experienced results that come from reading God's Word like David experienced. See, David was serious about getting into God's Word. He understood that the only way he could make the right decisions for himself, his family and the country was to seek God's wisdom. In fact, in Psalm 119:105 he compares God's Word to a light when he says, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."

Now, in my house, lamps are very important - especially night lights. When Tamara decides to move the furniture around, she knows she has to create two clear, lighted paths for my midnight sleepwalk ventures - one to the bathroom and one to the pantry. If not, she and I will both be experiencing a very loud, unwanted wake-up call. That's exactly what the psalmist was trying to show Israel - that the truth found in God's Word was to serve as a light for their path to help them in two ways: to help them steer clear of sin and its harmful effects and to walk into an incredible future they'd never known was possible.

Several years ago, some friends of my wife's and mine were facing some pretty serious marriage challenges. During their first counseling session, they both brought extensive lists of what they thought their spouse was doing wrong. But at the end of their sessions, the list had changed dramatically. When I asked them what had made the change, they responded with a simple answer: They got into God's Word.

As the wife studied, she found from the light of Ephesians 5:33 that she wasn't respecting her husband the way she should have been. As the husband sought God's wisdom, he found that he didn't love his wife the way he was supposed to. Because they chose to act on God's Word, their whole life was revolutionized. From their health to their finances to their relationships with their children - it changed everything.

Reading the Bible should get us excited. Why? There are promises in that Book for a better life. Who doesn't want an upgrade? And what's even better is this: God gave us these promises because he is more than capable of fulfilling them. We can rest in his ability to change our outcomes, no matter how difficult they seem.

So, let me ask you this today: Are you living in light of God's Word? If not, make a change. Begin to take his Word seriously. And like David, value it to the point of action. The most important thing we can do is learn God's Word and live it. So, start living in the light of God's Word, and get ready to walk into the incredible places it will take you.
