Soon members of the American GI Forum Justo Leal Chapter in Port Lavaca won't have to move a bucket around to catch the rain through its leaking roof.

On Wednesday, the organization was one of 10 nonprofit agencies to receive grant funds from the Dow Seadrift Operations Community Grant Program.

Eddie Rendon, chapter commander, noting the ongoing drought conditions, said, "Maybe after we get the roof going, the rain will come."

The $10,000 grant will go toward roof repair and the group plans fundraisers to pay for the remaining costs.

The building was built in the late 1950s and the organization acquired it in the 1960s, said Rendon.

The American GI Forum building is available to rent for weddings, receptions and other small parties. Nonprofit groups or families in need may also qualify to use the building at a reduced cost.

Monthly organization meetings are also held in the building. The American GI Forum aids veterans with benefits claims and with transportation to the Veteran's Administration hospital in San Antonio. This year it provided 13 scholarships to Calhoun County students.

"We thank Dow for what it's done and hopefully we'll be able to continue to help the community," Rendon said during the check presentation.

Dow Seadrift Operations Public Affairs Manager Trish Ritthaler thanked the representatives from the area nonprofit groups for the work they do.

"We are giving to you today, but we know it's you who are giving of your time, talents, expertise and commitment to make our communities better places to live," she said.

About $71,000 in grants was awarded in 2011. Dow has given out more than $450,000 through its community grants program since 2004. Recipients are chosen by a committee of Dow employees and external community members.
