College Q&A: Take advantage of VC tutoring options

I'm a freshman at Victoria College, and I'm worried I might get behind in my classes. What can I do?

First of all, welcome to Victoria College. And secondly, don't worry. VC offers a variety of support services to help ensure the success of our students, including many options for tutoring. There are a variety of tutors located in tutoring centers at the Victoria location and at both the Calhoun and Gonzales locations.

VC is preparing to make some big changes in tutoring locations. Currently, the Main Tutoring Center is in the Continuing Education Center, and there are other locations for reading and math tutoring. However, in the coming months, the Main Tutoring Center and the Reading/Writing Center will combine into a newly remodeled and more conveniently located Tutoring Center in Johnson Hall.

Be on the lookout for announcements on the VC homepage of a grand opening and expanded hours. Until then, check the Tutoring Center website at victoriacollege.edu/tutoringcenter for the center's hours and tutor schedules.

You may also want to check with your instructors to see if any of your classes are offering supplemental instruction. Supplemental instruction is a voluntary program where students benefit from the guidance of a fellow student who has already passed the class. Many of these courses that have been historically challenging offer an SI group to help students. The safety and support of a group setting comprised of students all taking the same class is meant to create an environment where you'll become more comfortable with college-level materials and study requirements.

Check out all the resources available to you at VC on the Student Resources page. Just go to the VC home page, then to About VC and scroll to the bottom part of the menu where you'll find the Student Resources link.

For more information about any of VC's tutoring services, please contact Tutoring Coordinator Betty East at 361-572-6473.
