A community-wide gathering to pray for rain will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at DeLeon Plaza in downtown Victoria.

"There have been statewide prayer services and other places have had them, I just thought it was time to do something here in Victoria," said event organizer Wayne Dierlam.

The leaders of several area churches will be in attendance to lead prayers at 7:30 p.m. The event will also include singing.

Representatives from the Crossroads Chapter of the American Red Cross will also be on hand with water for those in attendance.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Victoria has had less than one inch of rain in the last month and only about eight inches in 2011, according to National Weather Service records.

Noting rain is in the forecast for Thursday and Friday, Dierlam said, "Just talking about praying for rain is working already."

  • If you want to find out how many whiney babies it takes to create a block of comments, just post something about religion or politics. They will rear their heads.

I have no doubt what the Dali meant and I think it would be remarkable to listen in on a conversation between Jesus and The Budda. The subject was about acceptance of others and was in no way a challenge to anyones moral center. No need to read between the lines. Seems very straight forward. Plenty love and peace here thank you.

  • digital,

I wonder if the gays are welcomed to this event. Funny, how you had a problem with the gay pride event being advertised in the Advocate, but you seem to be A-OK with this Christian event being advertised.

Please read Rebeccas post and relax. My tone was positive regarding bringing folks togeather. I am sorry if you found that subversive. Did not see anything that would or even could be considered "draging someone into a fight".

  • Rebecca, Thank you for the words of wisdom. Now I will find my center and "Aruuum, arumm.............".

I don't recall saying anyone was told not to come. My point was were other religions invited to participate? The community is always better served when we embrace our differances. I hope all beliefs are there plus those that just want rain and dancing under a full moon has not helped.

  • I wish them all success. It would be nice if the group were completely inclusive of all beliefs and teachings. I wonder what Jesus and Budda would say to this group about acceptance of others?

  • For shame.

  • On a more peaceful note, here are some words from the Dalai Lama's Facebook page: In daily practice, reflect on the benefits of love, compassion and kindness, then reflect on the disadvantages of anger. Such continuous contemplation, the growing appreciation of love, has the effect of reducing our inclination towards hatred and increasing our respect for love. By this means even anger can be diminished.

  • Latest forecast looks as if they have scared the rain away.

  • I consider myself agnostic, but when an article appears about Christians and praying it doesn't take long for certain posters to poke fun at the believers. So what if a group of people want to get together and pray for rain? We still have freedom of religion in this country.
Last week the Victoria Islamic Center invited the community to join them to pray for rain, which was great. Where were the posters then to make fun of their beliefs?
I have family, friends and co-workers that are practicing Christians. I respect them for their choice and in return they do not question my choice to be non-religious.

  • Kyle and Pilot. Hope to see you guys there. If nothing else you may get a chance to visit with Mr. Tasin and comment on his sign if he shows.

Actually, I just wanted to make a positive post after the first several were from the God haters of Victoria County. Anytime there is a post that has anything to do with spiritual issues, we ALWAYS have the same godless folks that feel compelled to inject their trash comments. Seems like people who hate God would comment on things they have an interest in, or care about, or know something about.

  • I wonder what the Japanese did when they were hit by a tsunami earlier this year?

  • Since rain has been in the forecast for awhile now, you should probably give thanks instead of praying for something that is probably going to happen. Whatever floats your boat...

  • Rain Out! Yes, that would be pretty awesome, now, wouldn't it? Yeah, a few days of 30%-50% predicted, but I doubt we'll catch up to the '11 average...

How many times has there been a forecast for it, 30%, and NOTHING happens?

    August 30, 2011 at 7:01 a.m.
  • Maybe they plan on giving praise for the blessing of rain.....that the forecasters are predicting.

    August 30, 2011 at 6:59 a.m.
  • Duh, they pick a day when there is a 50% chance of rain, hope they're all under the Gazebo praying it'll stop.

    August 30, 2011 at 6:59 a.m.
  • Rain has been in the forecast for a while now....so I don't really get why they are doing this when it's already going to rain for several days.

    August 29, 2011 at 11:40 p.m.
  • Wouldn't it be cool if they got rained out?
