Motorists could soon be driving more than 70 mph down Texas roadways.

And yes, legally.

A law that went into effect Thursday allows the Texas Department of Transportation to re-analyze roads for a speed limit increase to 75 miles per hour.

The law, known as House Bill 1353, was approved during the 82nd Legislature.

Those changes may take several months, but changes to make nighttime speed limits of 65 mph the same as 70 mph daytime speed limits will be seen within the coming weeks, said Lonnie Gregorcyk, district engineer for the TxDOT Yoakum District.

"It's a comprehensive review," Gregorcyk said.

TxDOT must analyze and measure the speeds and look at the geometry of the roads before increasing any speed limit, he said.

High profile roads, such as interstates, U.S. highways and state highways are first on the list of analysis.

Last will be less traveled roadways like county and farm-to-market roads.

The Crossroads may not see speed limit changes to major highways until late this year into early next year, Gregorcyk said.

Studies on curves, signage, passing zones and speed must be conducted before a speed limit increase, if any.

Motorists should follow the signs until they are removed, though the law goes into effect for the nighttime speed limit to be the same as in the daytime.

"If the Legislature brought this forth, we'll look closely and analyze," he said.
