Matthews claims high-score honors for week

Dec. 7, 2011 at 6:07 a.m.

The Sundowner League took a one-week break for Thanksgiving, and Dave Matthews was ready for action when it resumed.

Matthews started competition with a 228 game before stringing strikes and creating havoc on the pins to bowl games of 268 and 277 for a tremendous 773 series and the weekly high honors.

T.J. Mooney was very consistent as he almost bowled triplicate games of 245. His set of 245, 246, and 245 captured the second high total with a 736.

Mike Wortham was the third person to break the 700 mark with a nice 257 high game contributing towards a 710.

Other noteworthy scores for the men were Mark Pahmiyer (255-692), Darren Blohm (692), Kim Blake (678), Gary Matthews Jr. (677), Steve Dickinson (677), John Blaylock (672), Harold Bellanger Jr. (670), Justin Tweedle (668), Robert Ellis (254-667), Tony Bennett (263-656), Randy Morris (655), Dandy Richards (652), Steve Zeplin (258-650), Todd Pfuhl 286-649), Glenn Pitts (278), Korey Bryan 268), Frank Suniga (268), Michael Rodriguez (268), and Bruce Hammack (254).

The women also exhibited good bowling with Michelle Bonuz leading the charge during Sugar & Spice competition.

Bonuz rolled games of 201, 223, and 213 for a 637 series.

Lynda Mikulec was not far behind with a 245 high game helping towards a 633 total.

Lori Heil rolled two very nice sets of 226-628 and 613.

Also breaking the 600 mark was Carri Lee 248-618.

Christine Speer with 225-597 and Nicole Mergele with 235-590 were other good scores for the ladies.

Vera Cruz bowlers for the week were Dave Matthews 773 (Sundowners) and Michelle Bonuz 721 (Sugar & Spice).

The Century Lanes is accepting entries for it's annual New Years Eve No-Tap Jackpot Doubles competition and fun night. The entry is $50 per team and the forms are at the front desk.

You may also contact Trent Blake at 576-1166 for information. Only the first 64 paid entries will be accepted.

ESPN broadcasted the finals of the World Bowling Tour competition last Sunday with Carolyn Dorin-Ballard defeating Finland star Sandra Andersson in the finals 207 to 162. Andersson must have been nervous since she missed two 10-pin spares in the first two frames to give Dorin-Ballard a big advantage.

In the opening matches, Sean Rash defeated Jason Belmonte 214-210 to advance to the finals against Mika Koivuniemi.

Koivuniemi defeated Rash 237 to 224 for the title.

This Sunday at noon, ESPN will broadcast the first of four elimination rounds in a 16-man field to reach the finals of the PBA World Championship, which is the first PBA Major tournament of the 2011-12 season.
