Museum of the Coastal Bend has lots to offer
By Katy Long
I've seen the Museum of the Coastal Bend in the news quite a bit lately. What's new there, and when is the museum open?
The Museum of the Coastal Bend opened its newest exhibit, "Cattle Boom: Ranching in Victoria and the Texas Coastal Bend, 1845-1929," last April. Texas' legendary cattle industry originated in the Coastal Bend, and this exhibit tells the story of ranching families, cattle drives and ranching culture through artifacts, historical photographs, documents and maps from regional collections.
Just this past October, the museum added an important exhibit to complement the Cattle Boom exhibit. During Victoria's Bootfest celebration in October, the museum conducted a branding activity and invited local ranchers to come and place their brands in a local Brand Wall exhibit that is now a permanent part of the museum's collection. The branding activity in October was so popular, in fact, that the museum had another branding activity just before Thanksgiving, which added quite a few more local brands to the collection.
On exhibit now through Thursday, Dec. 15, you also can see sculpture, paintings and watercolor drawings by accomplished Victoria artist Harold Nichols.
The museum serves as an important local resource, preserving and showcasing the rich multi-cultural heritage of the mid-coastal region of Texas, offering all Victoria residents the appreciation and enjoyment of the region's heritage.
The Museum of the Coastal Bend is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Group tours may be scheduled as well and the Museum offers school groups the opportunity to expand knowledge by encouraging self-directed learning. The region's heritage is on display in interpretive exhibits, available in hands-on stations and through recorded audio tours.
Also as part of its permanent collection, you may be interested in the museum's other exhibits, including Early Peoples of the Texas Coastal Bend and the La Salle Odyssey. The museum also offers a full schedule of workshops, activities and lectures.
Please visit the museum's website at museumofthecoastalbend.org for more details and a calendar of exhibits and events.
