CUERO - Mary Polansky pointed with pride to the looming arch at the end of the lake road in Cuero Municipal Park.
"The new poinsettia arch is gorgeous," said Polansky, a member of the December Events Committee that puts on the annual Christmas in the Park holiday display.
The 12th edition of Christmas in the Park features 27 new scenes, bringing the total to 140, she said.
The gates to the self-guided driving tour, across from Walmart on U.S. Highway 87, opened the Monday before Thanksgiving and the public has been out in force.
"We're off to a good start again this year. And things really pick up on the weekend," Polansky said. "On Thursday, we handed out 500 cups of hot chocolate."
Last year, a record 20,637 vehicles made the drive through the displays, said Polansky.
Some of the display designs are chosen and paid by for people in the community, while others are regular scenes including the river boat with "moving" paddlewheel.
Since vandalism in 2009 resulted in the destruction of several displays, including the popular American flag display that was replaced this year, security measures have been beefed up during Christmas in the Park.
Increased police patrols continue in the park, even after the holiday displays close for the night, as well as strategically-placed portable surveillance cameras, said Cuero Police Chief Jay Lewis.
Hot cocoa nights are Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. A Live Nativity will be on display from Dec. 16-18.
The December Events Committee is an ad hoc committee of the Cuero Development Corporation.
