City Corner column: City organizes blood drive
By Jennifer Sourdellia
I heard the city of Victoria is hosting a blood drive for the community, and I would like to participate. When will the blood drive take place?
The city of Victoria is having a two-day blood drive for the community on Thursday and Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. both days.
The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center's mobile unit will be parked in the back parking lot at 700 Main Center (located at the corner of Rio Grande and Main Street) for blood collection. Blood donors can enter the building's parking lot from North Street.
Show your holiday spirit, and give the gift of life. Blood donations are critical to saving the lives of others. Each day, the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center needs 600 units of blood to meet the demands of 100 hospitals and clinics in 43 South Texas counties. The Victoria blood bank alone supports 12 surrounding counties.
Anyone 16-years-old weighing 120 pounds (with a parental consent form), or at least 17-years-old weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health can donate blood. There is no upper age limit for donation.
Donors must present a valid form of identification, such as a company ID badge, driver's license, security badge with a photograph and name, passport, yearbook listing with photo, or a bank card or credit card that contains a photograph. Donors are also asked to bring a listing of medications that they are currently taking.
If you would like to donate blood, please pre-register for an appointment for the city of Victoria's Blood Drive by calling Jennifer Sourdellia at 361-485-3109 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Scheduling an appointment in advance will reduce wait times.
When will the city's Curbside Recycling Program begin? What types of items can I recycle?
City of Victoria residents will have the opportunity to recycle items curbside starting on Feb. 6, 2012. The city will deliver one 96-gallon green and yellow automated recycling container to every residential household in Victoria beginning in January 2012.
Recycled items will be picked up every other week. The city's Environmental Services Department is currently finalizing recycling collection schedules, and this information will be announced at a later date.
The single-stream recycling program allows residents to mix recyclable paper, plastic, metals, cardboard and glass in one bin. The following list includes examples of the types of items that will be accepted:
Plastics: Plastic bottles and jugs, milk containers, detergent containers and plastic bags;
Metals: Aluminum cans, steel cans, tin cans and aerosol cans;
Glass: Bottles and jars;
Paper and Cardboard: Newspapers, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, office papers, cereal boxes, pizza boxes, paper bags, phone books and gift wrapping.
The following items will not be accepted: Styrofoam, electronics, ceramics, dishes, yard waste, motor oil containers, light bulbs, hazardous waste, window glass, mirrors and trash.
Place your recycling at the curb on collection day no later than 7 a.m. Place cart in the same place as the regular automated garbage cart, 5 feet from other carts, vehicles and other obstacles;
Remove contents from recyclables and rinse all containers before placing them in the recycling cart;
Flatten corrugated cardboard before placing in the recycling cart.
For more information, please contact Environmental Services at 361-485-3230 or visit victoriatx.org and click on the "Environmental Services" link for a complete list of acceptable items for recycling.
