Two St. Joseph High School students have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Chris Mason, a senior, was named a semifinalist in the 2012 program.

Mason has been involved with both the school and the community. This year he was in cross-country and basketball, student council, the Marianist Life Community, and is an altar server at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. He also recently received recognition as a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist, which was elected by the Texas Boys State Program.

Mason is applying to Duke University, Yale University, Notre Dame University, the University of Texas, Texas A&M University and Baylor University. He said he wants to major in biomedical engineering and wants to serve others around him.

Mason is the son of John and Gail Mason, of Victoria.

His classmate, Christian Wenske, was presented with a letter of commendation from St. Joseph High School and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Wenske is an active member of various school activities such as basketball, cross country, and National Honor Society. Wenske has not decided where he plans to attend college but hopes to major in either engineering or accounting.

Wenske is the son of Michael and Mary Wenske, of Victoria.

The National Merit Scholarship winners for 2012 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 283,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the National Merit Scholar title.
