Department of Public Safety troopers seized about 12 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop near Telferner on Saturday.
Rodrigo Jessel Vasquez, 33, of Brownsville, was arrested after troopers discovered cocaine inside a built-in compartment in Vasquez's 1998 Dodge Ram's engine, said Gerald Bryant, DPS spokesperson.
Vasquez was traveling north on U.S. Highway 59 enroute to Houston from Matamoros, Mexico, about 1:30 p.m., when he was stopped for an equipment violation, Bryant said.
"The trooper detected several signs of criminal activity and received verbal consent to search the vehicle," Bryant said.
The cocaine has an estimated street value of $125,000, Bryant said.
Vasquez was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a first-degree felony, Bryant added.
