Work along Broadway Street beginning in Cuero
Work along U.S. Highway 87 (Broadway Street) in Cuero begins this week, and highway department officials hope to avoid school traffic during the project, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation.
The project will begin with a hot mix overlay at the corner of Broadway and Esplanade streets, stopping before the elementary and high school areas in an effort to avoid the schools.
Hunter Industries was awarded the contract, part of a larger project totaling $5.1 million that includes work in DeWitt and Victoria counties. The contractor has 90 days to complete the project.
"We discussed with city officials the opportunity to avoid school traffic when planning this project," said Yoakum Area Engineer Brian Schoenemann. "Together, the decision was made to avoid the area in front of the schools this week as a courtesy to area residents."
Road improvements will extend in front of the elementary and high schools the week of Dec. 19, continuing outside the city limits south on the highway through the end of the month while the schools are closed for the winter holiday, according to the news release.
Motorists can expect alternating lane closures in the area and are encouraged to drive with caution through the work zones.
