The Nutcracker is going to the dogs.
The canine performers of Circus Chickendog, of Austin, will be perform their rendition of Tchaikovsky's ballet, the perennial holiday favorite. The performance will be part of a free show offered to young people over the weekend.
The events will be hosted at the Englein Haus Cultural Event Center, 117A N. Main St, Hallettsville.
The weekend events will kick off with performances by The Young Historians, teen Czech traditional dancers. The show will also feature performances by Chris Rybak, the cowboy accordionist.
Shows are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday. Complimentary refreshments will be served.
The Muttcracker (Sweet) is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday. The event will also feature a live accordionist and a performing parrot. Both events are free.
Organizer Nancy Braus said they put together these shows to give young people a chance to be exposed to the fine arts. Braus said it can be difficult to get children to theaters and musical performances, like "The Nutcracker," but this brings the arts to them.
"This is a great way to be introduced to "The Nutcracker" if you've never seen it before," Braus said.
