REFUGIO - Twenty-four hours before kickoff, tumbleweeds may as well have been blowing through Refugio High School.

Students had scrambled to finish their finals before heading off for a six-hour road trip to the state championship game, leaving a trail of orange in their wake.

"They wouldn't let us say 'if' but 'when.' When we win the game, finals will be moved up," said sophomore cheerleader Hannah Rose.

Hannah left school early Thursday, then met up with her sister, Emma, a color-guard member who spent her last day before the big game practicing for halftime.

Emma had stayed in school all day, but conceded not much was accomplished amidst all the excitement.

"All the boys and most of the girls were talking about football most of the time," the seventh-grader said.

The sisters were with their parents for the drive to Arlington, hopping on the road with dozens of other families making their way north.

Bobcat signs ushered travelers out of town, and plenty of car windows turned temporarily orange, graffiti'd with Bobcat cheers.

The rest of the cheerleaders and band members would leave town on a charter bus between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Friday. By 3 a.m., word around town was another 20 charter buses carrying 57 people each would leave Refugio for the noon game.

The sisters said this moment has dominated conversations around school for much of the season.

Hannah knew the state championship was only a road trip away after interviewing the team's head coach, Jason Herring, for the school's newspaper earlier in the season.

"He said he took it a game at a time, but you could just tell after districts, he was ready to go," she said.
