Richards achieves bowling perfection

Dec. 21, 2011 at 6:21 a.m.

Herschel (Dandy) Richards reached perfection during Red River League competition with a tremendous display of strike power.

He opened league play with 12 strikes for a perfect game and then followed with the first six strikes in the second game before a six-pin count stopped his string.

In the first two games, he struck on 22 out of a possible 24 strikes to fashion games of 300 and 271.

As the lanes changed, his carry stopped, and he finished with a 202 final game and a 773 series for the high honors.

This was Richards second 300 game with his first one being bowled in October of 1991.

Christine Speer dazzled the women's scoring with a great series of 671 posted during Friday's mixed competition.

Speer opened with games of 242 and 183 and then proceeded to start the final game with eight strikes before a nine-pin count stopped her string. She opened the last two frames to finish with a 246 game.

Mike Stacy posted the second high total for the week with big games of 256 and 278 contributing towards a 757 series. He also rolled a 258-678 set in another league.

Also breaking the 700 mark were Tony Bennett (715), Mike Thomas (711), and Steve Zeplin (258-707).

Other good scores for the men were Mike Wortham (694), T.J. Mooney (690), David Matthews (689/679/254), Mark Svatek (683), Kim Blake (257-678), Dale Cockrill (677), Kenny Schupbach (676/656), Bobby Marques (259-664), Rene Silgero (255-657), Abel Garcia (655/653), Randy Morris (654), Jerry Molina (654), Joey Matson (653), Jesse Guerra (652), Bo Kitchens (266), and Kevin Rosales (256).

Marci Rojas turned in the second high total for the women with a 246 high game helping towards a 652 set.

Other great scores for the ladies were Carri Lee (223-642), Rebekah Martinez (256-622), Lori Heil (245-618/258-604), Carolyn Danesi (229-601), and Debbie Gillespie with a nice 235 high game.

Vera Cruz bowlers for the week were Mike Thomas 759 (Wild Turkey) and Marci Rojas 751 (Sundowners).

Ryan Schafer won the Billy Hardwick division of the PBA World Championship finals by defeating Andres Gomez from Columbia. Schafer joins Osku Palerma (Finland) as the second of four finalists to compete for the PBA World Championship.

The Johnny Petraglia division of the championships will be broadcast on New Year's day at noon on ESPN.

Best wishes for a full recovery to senior bowler Roque Estrada, who underwent knee replacement surgery last Monday. This is his second knee replacement so he will now have bionic knees to continue his life and enjoy his activities.
