Saturday Sermon: My Christmas list for you

Dec. 23, 2011 at 6:23 a.m.

"I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

"I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe."

So, I along with the Apostle Paul, "keep asking" that God will give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better. Another version, The Message, says it like this: "To make you intelligent and discerning in knowing Him personally."

Paul and I ask, through prayer, that "the eyes of your heart may be enlightened" so that you may know 1) the hope to which he has called you, 2) the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and 3) his incomparably great power for us who believe.

You might want to check with your pastor or leader to see, but I would venture to say that each one of them sends this same or a similar Christmas list for you to God every day. Now, how about you returning the favor? How about you sending this very same list to God for your pastor or leader, right now. And every day from here on.

May God bless each of you this Christmas season, as well as those who celebrate the other festivals of faith at this time of year.

The Rev. David King is pastor at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Victoria.
