By Julian Huerta
Sec. 545.423. Crossing property.
(a) An operator may not cross a sidewalk or drive through a driveway, parking lot, or business or residential entrance without stopping the vehicle.
(b) An operator may not cross or drive in or on a sidewalk, driveway, parking lot, or business or residential entrance at an intersection to turn right or left from one highway to another highway.
Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, Sec. 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.
Why the emphasis on these particular traffic laws?
A lot of people assume they can simply drive onto the roadway without stopping when exiting a private drive or parking lot, which is not true as the law clearly states.
If you have a traffic law question, contact Sgt. Julian Huerta, Victoria Police Department Traffic Safety Unit, 361-485-3700.

how about all the drivers using the left turn lane to enter traffic from side streets and parking lots. The left turn lane is not for this. when are the police going to put a stop to this practice as it causes alot of accidents on our roadways. ITS A LEFT TURN LANE PEOPLE. AND WHILE YOUR AT IT PUT AWAY YOUR CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING. talking and texting while driving puts everyone in danger. if you must use the phone pull into a parking lot and stop being a DUMB@#$. If our law enforcement officers put as much effort into stopping these real risks to public safety as they do into writing seat belt tickets we all would be much safer.
