2011 YEAR IN REVIEW, No. 3: St. Joseph wins softball title

Waco doesn't seem like the best place to film the end of a dramatic sports movie, but that's what St. Joseph softball fans witnessed on an afternoon in May.

Senior first baseman Brianna Shimek came up the the plate with a chance to get the state championship winning hit against Houston St. Agnes.

Just a few feet away from Brianna, her mother, Carolyn, was sitting in her wheelchair, watching from the right of homeplate.

Carolyn is fighting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This was Brianna's fourth trip to the TAPPS Softball State Tournament, for the first time her mother could attend.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Paige Terrell was on third base and Brianna came up to the plate.

Shimek hit a walk off single to left field that scored Terell and gave St. Joseph the TAPPS 5A State Championship.

The Lady Flyers overcame a 2-0 third inning deficit to force extra innings and ultimatley win the game.

What made the win more remarkable was St. Joseph was the smallest school in TAPPS 5A while St. Agnes was the most populous school in the class.
