Department of Public Safety troopers inspect a Volkswagen involved in a two-car wreck that killed Mayra Monge on U.S. Highway 59 near Stubbs School Road.

A Pasadena woman was killed in a two-vehicle wreck Thursday night on U.S. Highway 59 near Stubbs School Road.

Mayra Monge, 38, was a passenger in a 2000 silver Volkswagen driven by her husband, Noe Monge, 39, also of Pasadena.

Justice of the Peace Annie Ramos pronounced Mayra Monge dead at 8:07 p.m.

The collision occurred about 7:20 p.m. with a 2007 International tractor-trailer driven by Daniel Lacy, 36, of Houston. The truck driver was hauling oil field pipe from Houston to Tilden, said Department of Public Safety Trooper Gerald Bryant.

The tractor-trailer belonged to W.M. Dewey of Houston.

The Monges were traveling from Pasadena to Progresso, Bryant said.

Lacy was traveling north on US 59 South and was taking the crossover to go south on the highway. Meanwhile, Monge was traveling south in the inside lane of US 59 South. He took evasive action to miss the tractor-trailer, but the front right corner of the Volkswagen struck the back right corner of the trailer, Bryant said.

Lacy was not injured and Monge was transported to Citizens Medical Center, the trooper said.

All three were wearing seat belts, Bryant said.

The inside southbound lane of US 59 was closed while troopers investigated the scene.

The wreck, which occurred eight miles from Victoria, remains under investigation by Trooper Joseph Schuler.

Assisting at the scene were the Victoria County Sheriff's Office and Victoria and Raisin fire departments.

The wreck marks the second fatal traffic wreck in two days.

On Wednesday, Benjamin Cone, 32, of Edna, was killed in a one-car rollover on Farm-to-Market Road 1686. Two passengers in Cone's vehicle were not injured.
