Victoria Genealogical Society hosts meeting

The Victoria County Genealogical Society met Jan. 10 with several new officers taking leadership roles in the organization. New officers for the 2011 are President Kenneth Booth, re-elect; Recording Secretary Joyce Henneke, Treasurer Patricia Patterson Williams and Communications Elaine Malina.
The meeting was held at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 2105 N. Ben Jordan St. President Booth welcomed members and guests. He then introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Blanche Deleon. She spoke on the history of the city of Victoria and the role the Deleon family played in the history. She also announced a Deleon family reunion is being planned for the descendants of the founding Deleon family to be held in April.
Programs for February and March were announced. Willie Blackmon, an African American Historian, has a keen interest in genealogy that he developed while listening to his uncles and aunts in the Fifth Ward of Houston. The March 14 meeting will be presented by Jane Buck presenting "Using DNA for Your Family Research."
All meetings start at 7 p.m. Members are urged to attend and guests are always welcome.
