Victoria College's version of homecoming, Pirate Day, started out with a tailgate party, some music, food and games, and it ended with a blowout of the Universal All-Stars in front of a packed house.
Victoria College jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the game and never stopped running in a 111-87 win.
Happiest of all might have been Carlos Cortez.
The Austwell-Tivoli graduate and recent transfer to Victoria College had been nursing a sprained ankle for a few games.
He finally got a chance to get back on the court, and he made his presence felt with 25 points and five 3-pointers.
He had four teammates in double figures including Donte McGee with 18, Russell McElwee with 14, A.J. Irwin with 13 and Rock Martin with 12.
Martin, another recent addition to the Pirates, got the lion's share of his points off turnovers.
"That's what Rock is," head coach Jona Anderson said. "He's a defensive specialist."
Martin used his quick hands and defensive instincts to continually pick the pockets of Universal ball handlers, leading to fast break layups or free throws.
Anderson said the 24-point win was nice, but he thought his team could've broken it open even more.
Still, he's pleased with a win heading into the last portion of their schedule.
The Pirates have sole possession of first place in their conference with five league games remaining.
Anderson said the team is excited about the chance to win the conference and hang their first banner in the gym.
The team hosts Northwest Vista College on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in its quest to win the conference.
