Off the top of your head, What board were you on and what years were you there? And volunteered for which others? -
justataxpayer,
I have sat on the board of one non-profit and volunteered for numerous others. Off the top of my head, I'd say at least 6 or more. Every year I donate my time and money to better my community. You see, I feel like I should do more than just be a critic of my community. If I don't like something, then I try to get involved. If I can't, then I at least try to bend the ear of those that are.Your turn.

justataxpayer,
Let us know how the VD goes after the butter churning, bubble bath, and rub-down. Sounds like you're getting a lot of bang for your buck.
February 14, 2011 at 3:31 p.m. -
Justataxpayer,
When was the last time you tried to actually get involved in the process? What organization, board or association have you been involved with or tried to get involved with?It seems to me that for someone that takes taxes as seriously as you, it would be imperative that they try to include themselves in the process.

Thanks for the clarification;
What's the old saying "Great minds think alike" or in our case, Great minds support the same way of posting/comments.
It is of little or no concern to me if anyone is connected to each other, what I read and observe is if your comments are supportive of your views and if they have validity.
As I post, I do look back in the archives of the Advocate to see if I can post supporting information to make my case.
Yesterday, I was a Democrat, today I am a Republican, and tomorrow I might be a Liberal. I support what is best for me and Victoria. -

I think there is a boot manufacturing plant coming to town?
February 14, 2011 at 8:56 a.m. -
Yes, PatB. Spotter and I were sous chefs for justataxpayer. He makes a osso buco with a creamy risotto that is just to die for!
I miss the CIA...

Didn't know this was going to be such a lively discussion or I would have jumped in with my $.02USD. A little late now.
February 14, 2011 at 7:53 a.m.
EA,
Didn't know you went to the Culinary Institute of America. Beautiful campus on the Hudson River. -
Saltgrass,
I was not accusing you of being connected to others on this forum. I was using your screen name to make a point for surffree. I trust that you are not affiliated with any other poster on this forum, except that you post on a common forum. I do think everyone understood what I was doing.
If I caused you any inconvenience, I apologize. Now, if surfree understands that the rest of us are not connected, either, we're all good!

This is exactly what I'm concern about:
February 13, 2011 at 10:36 p.m.
The VEDC needs to have funds on hand. We have no way of knowing how much of it will be spent or what else might develop.
This tells me not all the cards are on the table. How can anyone venture into a contract by... "We have no way of knowing how much of it will be spent or what else might develop. -
@EdithAnn...I am Saltgrass, I am not connected nor affiliated with anyone. I have my own concerns as how my tax paying dollars are used and concern as to how the City Council manages our monies and makes my decisions.
February 13, 2011 at 10:30 p.m.
But please send me y'all log in pass words so if I disagree with your posts I can Log into your account to change your comments to what will benefit my ideas. Thanks
I would think any large corporation would want to let the public know they were coming to Victoria this way Joe Blow might decide to move to Victoria in hopes of getting a job. -
Will this $100,000 be a good investment, pehaps with multiplied returns over many years? It is a question of judgement and made without the benefit of a crystal ball. The only thing worth debating is whether this board can understand the opportunity and then take decisive action given the probabilities of the possible outcomes. I'm comfortable with these board members, they understand risk and reward, in my opinion.

The weather was rather lovely today, perhaps somewhere out on Lone Tree Road?
Or down in Riverside Park?
I'll bring the lawn chairs.

Well, I just tried to set up a meeting at Moo-Moos, but they're booked up for the foreseeable future. I'll see if our local bakery has any meeting space.

Surffree said: "It matters because its deceptive. It matters because its hypocritical to accuse public figures of being connected or incestuous when you are no different."
Even if we were connected in some fashion, we're not spending anyone's money as if it were our own. We're all independently defending our stakes in our government, and we tend to harmonize when we see our elected representatives behaving irresponsibly. I think we'd be dangerous if we were connected, though. Hmm, perhaps I should arrange a meeting.
February 13, 2011 at 8:02 p.m. -
Surffree—
It’s deceptive to share an opinion with someone else? Since when? Of course if all I as a good republican ever looked at was FOX News, I’d have to agree with you.
Hypocritical to lump all the republicans together or all City Council that votes alike every time? Since when? Again, we are not all connected. Well, not any more than you are to those you agree with on this forum.
Surffree, you have made a total of 10 comments under this screen name, but I do not know how long you have been following this forum. There are those of us who have several years logged over here, and we are just used to interacting with each other. If you are accusing us of sitting around and saying, “Okay, I’ll post this, then you post that”, then you need to get a life. And it’s not my fault when others can’t think of something original to post.
I can’t, won’t and don’t speak for the others, but I am not jaded at all. I haven’t lost anything. I do have a low tolerance for folks who post before they think, and then cry foul when busted. But that’s just a little quirk of mine.
You know, there are many others who agree with the three of us that you targeted. N45BA, Legion, KyleC and many other agree with us, and often. JackDeuce, he agrees—what about him? Why were they not included in your little conspiracy theory? Are they not connected to us? If you aren’t sure, check with radiobabe and holein1. I bet they’d be happy to help you out.
And a piece of advice—don’t believe everything you hear. Most of it’s bogus anyway.

Folks,
Victoria is just using the Obama model of government. As a taxpayer, a bill must be voted into law or the money must be spent before you can find out what is does or what it is for. It could be money set aside to make improvements to streets and sidewalks in front of city government personnel property. We will just have to wait and see what it does and then we will know.

And I'm Kevin Bacon.

It matters because its deceptive.
It matters because its hypocritical to accuse public figures of being connected or incestuous when you are no different.
It matters because you three are commentor bullies who try and dominate the conversation.
It matters because you three lob softballs at each other and act like its not planned or scripted.
It matters because its hard to tell if your opinions are jaded due to being a sore loser and the need to blame someone else.

We first met in the CIA. Taxpayer was a Navy Seal.
February 13, 2011 at 1:35 p.m. -
Surffree-
You keep saying spotter, justataxpaer and myself are connected. Well, I guess we are connected by the fact we hold similar opinions. Which would then make you connected to radiobabe, holein1, Dale Fowler, Bridgette Bise and the others who share your opinion, right?
Whether we are connected or not, I'm still trying to figure out how 'connection' is relevant to any discussion of posters. What's your point?
If I admitted that justataxpayer is my brother-in-law's son-in-law and that I am spotter first ex-wife, this changes the picture, how?
For the sake of your concerns, let's just stipulate that spotter and justataxpayer and EdithAnn are connected. Now what?
February 13, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. -
so who audits how that was spent 100k ?
vicad, have you ever heard of the freedom of information act ?
February 13, 2011 at 1:14 p.m. -
BS - You claim that there is too much "incest" among the leaders. It is public information as to which boards/committees these leaders are involved and they are upfront and honest about these affiliations.
Are you upfront and honest about your affiliations to the other commentors on these boards?
Maybe someone will put together a circle diagram with you, edithann, and justataxpayer and show how you three are connected.

N3225J: "I almost feel that this has a conflict of interest involved."
Well, you're right. Armstrong sits on the Board of Directors of the VEDC, and he votes to approve funds for them from City. There's way to much incest in our "leadership" structure. "Bring Your Banjo" would've been a more appropriate slogan, don't ya think?

The concern I have with our devoted City Council:
February 13, 2011 at 10:24 a.m.
It is such a close knit group, all projects which the Tax Payers do not agree, but the council supports, always get passed by one vote. Always different one person short opposes as to not upset their precincts .
Take for instant Ms. Rangel, who was voted in to represent the views of her precinct. What did she do, ignore what her voters wanted and voted for what the council convinced her was better for her precinct.
Any time the tax payers get too close for comfort, the council decides to go into "closed non-public sessions".
So as long as the council members know what's best for me or the "Tax Payers" of Victoria, why should we worry? -

Agenda for city council meetings are readily available on the City of Victoria website, listed under the City Secretary... http://www.victoriatx.org/council/ind...
February 13, 2011 at 8:04 a.m. -
I have enough faith in Truman to allow that this must have some merit. As for the other two jokers, I wouldn't trust anything on their agenda's given their behavior of late.
February 13, 2011 at 7:34 a.m. -
How do you find out what is on the agenda? Most of what we see in the VA is just the time of the meeting and maybe a few items that aren't controversial.
February 13, 2011 at 7:26 a.m.
Patrick Barnes -
Does this appear to be a slush fund? I almost feel that this has a conflict of intrest involved.
February 13, 2011 at 7:11 a.m. -
The way this article is written, the public discussion will come, after, the money is spent. ("Should discussions contiinue to go well and the $100,000 is used, there will be opportunity for full public discussion.") Any money that is approved to be spent by the STDB for these purposes, is less money available to repair existing infrastructure problems. i.e. Mayflower drainage/sewer issues, street repair, etc.
Not mentioned in this article but, ALSO INCLUDED on Tuesday's agenda under "City Manager's Report" is the matter of Woodway street closures. (As we have learned from previous issues, council can act with finality, and no further discussion on the issues under this parlimentary heading)
ALSO NOT MENTIONED in this article and under "Consent Agenda" is the matter of the parking lot for the Pumphouse Restaurant in Riverside Park.
The Advocate knows that these are controversial issues and it does a disservice to its readers by not publicizing the fact that city government is preparing to take action on them ... BEFORE the action is taken.
