Two people were taken to the hospital after two separate wrecks in the 3000 block of Wildwood Street on Thursday afternoon.

About 3 p.m., a Chrysler 300 driven by Delvia Gonzales, 66, was backing out of a driveway when it struck Leonard Bates, 53, who was on a bicycle, said Victoria Police Department Officer Zac DeLaRosa.

DeLaRosa said he did not notice any visible external injuries, but the bicyclist was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro to be evaluated.

Gonzales said she did not see the bicyclist behind her, and no citations were issued.

While DeLaRosa was investigating that crash, a man approached the officer and said his father had been in a wreck down the street.

A Ford Taurus driven by Joaquin Quintero, 26, hit the back of a Chevrolet truck driven by Charles Bates, 75, at 3:20 p.m.

The truck was at a stop sign and had started to turn onto Ben Wilson Street when it stopped again and was hit by the Taurus, DeLaRosa said.

Bates, who reportedly had a history of back problems, was taken to Citizens Medical Center, DeLaRosa said. A hospital spokesperson said Bates was in stable condition and being evaluated later Thursday.

It's unclear if the two Bates are related.

Quintero was issued a citation for improper start from the stop position, DeLaRosa said.
