A 23-year-old Mexican citizen was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday after he was found with more than 900 pounds of marijuana near Yoakum.

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper found Manuel Salvador Pacheco-Penaloza to be carrying 934 pounds of marijuana in a white Ford F-350 after he stopped the driver on suspicion of speeding about one mile north of Yoakum on Alternate U.S. Highway 77-A at noon Thursday, DPS Trooper Gerald Bryant said Friday.

After stopping, Pacheco-Penaloza ran on foot into a pasture, Bryant said.

The Lavaca County Sheriff's Office and Yoakum Police Department helped set up a perimeter and a Lavaca County deputy caught Pacheco-Penaloza in the field, Bryant added.

Three bundles were found behind the driver's seat and 68 more bundles were found in a hidden compartment in the bed of the truck, Bryant said.

The street value of the seizure is about $765,000, Bryant said.

Pacheco-Penaloza was held on federal charges of possession of a controlled substance because he is not a resident of the United States.

  • This individual was probably only trying to survive! I bet if he was a legal immigrant he would find a job to make a good living. Mexicans are hard working people they will work in what ever they can find. Why can't these people get a chance there's so much discrimination againts them! I believe that so much of this drug dealing could be avoided if some of these people were legalized; Now on the other hand, if you're gonna do a crime u gotta do the time...good luck to this individual doing jail time cause that was ALOT of pounds of marijuana.

  • Don't mess with Texas!

  • What pilot is trying to say is....he was going to get pulled over no matter what he was doing. The law can't put in the newspaper that they were tipped off. This mans family was probably paid a fortune (a few hundred dollars) so he could be the decoy and the real shipment could come through.
On another note...I bet Ford dealerships are very profitable down there!

  • Sell it to other states (are there 15 or so that allow it?) for medicinal use.

  • Besides, drug movers have to be the dumbest f**ks in the world. True, some do not get caught, but those who do inevitably get snagged on the stupidest actions. Familyman is right. If you're gonna be a mule via the highway, or even a treetop flier (love me some Stephen Stills, but that's another subject),

    1.) DON'T SPEED, PANDEJO!

2.) MAKE SURE YOUR SIGNALS WORK PROPERLY AND USE THEM

3.) OBEY STOP SIGNS AND STOP LIGHTS

4.) DON'T DO ANYTHING TO DRAW ATTENTION TO YOURSELF

5.) DON'T PISS OFF THE AUTHORITIES!

This public servant's....oops, I mean SERVICE announcement brought to you by somebody who has the brains to know better than to try to be a criminal.

  • Hey, Pilot, do you mean "caballero" or "Caballero"? Cause I know me some Caballeros, and this could get personal......

  • Folks, we just nailed the wooden spike into the cartels heart.
We won the war on drugs, everbody can now go home.

  • 20 years in Federal lockup is still better than 6 months on the streets of a Mexican city.

When are we gonna wake up and realize that the "War on Drugs" was lost, and legalize ganja and sell it stores like booze? Or better yet, grow it in my backyard?

  • @ pilot The reason they say "suspicion of speeding" is technically he hasn't been convicted yet. Same reason they call someone an "alleged murderer" even if they catch you red handed.

  • awesome! good job. But yoakum has so many drug dealers and dps hasn't busted them yet! these dealers have nice trucks, cars nice homes and even remodel inside and out of homes and they dont work kids even attend daycare while moms sit at home!

  • He deserved to get caught. If you are going to haul "federal time" (over 900 lbs of pot) in your truck don't you think it would be priorty #1 to follow the law and stay under the speed limit, check all your lights and make sure that the vehicle is legal. Give the law no reason to stop you. Just makes sense to me. Send him back to Mexico after he does 20 years hard labor in Levenworth, Ks..

  • looks like drug runners are trying to avoid the victoria area highways now

    February 18, 2011 at 9:05 p.m.
  • I guess it is "safer" to travel smaller roadways and to stay off the interstates. I hate that this in all of our neighborhoods now. Something sure needs to be done before it is too late! The drugs and violence are slowly creeping northward every day.

  • Was this a Mexican illegal or is this individual from another country? The name Penaloza sounds like a name from further south than Mexico. Hum...
