SMILEY- A Nixon man died in a house fire in Smiley at about 2 a.m. Friday.
Johnnie Edward Cook Sr., 64, died in the blaze, said Bob Wendel, a funeral director at Finch Funeral Chapel.
Details on the fire were not available Friday.
Cook's family could also not be reached for comment.
The house was located on Farm-to-Market Road 108, said Faye Cowen, who lives a block away from the house.
The house was located one block away from U.S. Highway 87, which runs through the town.
Cowen said she heard a series of explosions that were so loud it shook her house.
"Was that thunder or did someone hit my house?" Cowen said she thought.
Cowen, who was having trouble sleeping, watched from her bedroom as firefighters from the Smiley Volunteer Fire Department and Nixon Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze, which eventually burned the house to the ground.
Cowen is not sure what caused the explosions and did not know the man who died in the blaze, she said.
"It was really bad," Cowen said about what she saw. "It was horrible."
