The annual Cuero Livestock Show kicks off Saturday with grand opening ceremonies and a horse show.

The livestock show and sale are scheduled for next week.

Saturday's grand opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. at Friar Ag Center, 501 Airport Road, with the horse show starting at 11 a.m. in the adjacent rodeo arena.

The livestock show features more than 300 animals.

"We have about the same number of entries as last year," said Anthony Netardus, DeWitt County extension agent. "The only species that has really dropped off over the years is steers, and that is simply because of economics."

There are 15 steers entered in this year's show. In 2009, 25 steers were entered and 18 in 2010.

Livestock show action begins Wednesday with judging of commercial heifers at 1 p.m. Food and craft projects will be judged from 1 to 4 p.m.

This year's market show also includes 114 hogs, 25 lambs, 71 goats, 24 pens of chickens and 40 rabbits.

The breeding heifer and bull show starts at 4 p.m. Market swine judging is scheduled for 6 p.m.

On Thursday, homemaking items go on display at 8 a.m. Animal judging begins at 10 a.m. with poultry followed by market rabbits.

Commercial heifer exhibitors then take center stage with the record book judging from 9 to 11 a.m. and interviews from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Market animal judging begins again at 3 p.m. with goats then lambs. Market steer judging begins at 8 p.m.

The commercial heifer sale will be held via video at 6 p.m.

The Friday, March 4, activities include the Young Farmers' social at 5 p.m. Pre-auction ceremonies begin at 7 p.m., followed by the auction.
