Dog park would only take about an acre or so

Editor, the Advocate:

I saw the article from the editors in the paper on Feb. 24 about the 125-acre park being planned on Airline. This will be a great thing for the community, but with such a large area available, will the city please consider fencing off just one little acre to be made into a dog park?

I know so many residents would utilize an area like this. So many people walk their dogs on the trail, it would be great to get to the end of the trail and have a place to sit down and rest while the dogs continued to play off-leash.

Local dog owners have been asking for something like this for years, and this would be the perfect place for it.

  • Bighorn, a fenced dog park is what the writer and commenters are in favor of. Personally, I cannot allow my dog to run free unless the area is fenced, so I understand their request.

  • An acre wouldn't be close to enough for bigger dogs to "run around" in.

If you folks like, take your favorite pooch out to the yet undeveloped park now. This area has wide open since TX DOT hauled out all the fill for the 463 overpasses some 5 plus years ago. Take some water with you, and Fido will enjoy the time outdoors.

  • This would be so great- I'd love to have a lace for my little guy to run around freely out doors! He's so use to having acres of our own private woods to run in back in Cali, I can tell he's been missing the free space to run. Hopefully this goes somewhere!

  • I agree with Wendy. Victoria needs a dog park. We are members of Doodle Rescue Collective with members in all 50 states. There are many of our members that live in smaller communities than Victoria, and their cities have dog parks. We have traveled to other cities, meeting other members from different communities and spent an entire weekend allowing our doodles to have a "Doodle Romp". Georgetown "Bark Park" is one prime example of a great dog park, having both a large dog and small dog fenced area complete with water, benches, litter stations, etc. Most pet owners are responsible individuals always picking up after their pets, obeying park rules, and leaving the area free of litter, which is more than I can say about some people that leave our local parks littered with trash, and beer bottles each and every weekend. The amount of money it would cost the city to have a nice dog park is chump change compared to the thousands the city is going to spend building a parking lot for a restaurant in the park and the continuing money that will have to be spent to maintain it.
Lets do something to make Victoria more of a pet friendly city.
