REFUGIO - Martin Luther King Jr. did not die in vain. That's how Patty Lewis see's it, and she hopes Refugio sees it that way, too.

The Refugio City Hall secretary is a board member for the Refugio Community Cemetery Association, which is hosting King's celebration Saturday night with a banquet and Monday with a march from city hall into downtown.

"I, myself, think it is really, really important to celebrate, not just for the African-American community, but for everybody," she said.

The banquet Saturday will feature some talent from Refugio County, and Sharon Allen Chinn, formerly from Refugio, is the guest speaker.

Then, on Monday, a march will begin at 10 a.m. from the Refugio City Hall down to the Union Baptist Church on King Street.

Some more talent and youth groups from several churches in the area will be singing at the church for an after march celebration.

The banquet and march are done every year, and Lewis hopes it continues to grow.

Last year, about 100 people showed up for the march.

"It wasn't just African-Americans. It was all races," she said.
