As the parent of a student at East High School let me say: I was blissfully unaware of the situation until I read it in the paper. I had a call from VISD on my caller ID at home and since I do not have an answering machine, I chewed my poor son up one side and down the other... What did you do? Did you get ISS? Were you tardy? Why is the school calling? I was ready to go to the school Monday to see if my kid was in trouble... When I found out that the school was sending out a mass recorded message, I was a bit relieved to know my son wasn't in trouble.

Initially, I was upset about the fact that we weren't notified earlier, but after reading the comments here, realize that there was nothing for the parents to do as the school officials had the situation fully under control. When questioned, my son was also blissfully unaware of the brouhaha.

I try to be a good parent... I try to know what my son is up to... I invade his privacy and set limits and boundaries. Some days, he hates me for it.... but I tell him: I'm not your friend. I am not your equal, and you are not mine. I am a parent and I love you enough to let you hate me!!!!

It was a gun! A 15 year old student was carrying a gun. It was not a club. It was not a toy. It was a gun! How can anybody blow this off because it was unloaded. A 15 year old should not carry a gun ANYWHERE. This is a great learning moment. VISD, Law enforcement and parents must use this event to educate our youth and community that this is not going to be tolerated in our society. This has nothing to do with the 2nd Amendment. It is about a 15 year old with a gun.

I commend the staff of Victoria East High School for a job well done. Kudos to the student who reported a gun on campus. To thewaywardwind - yes, one student had a gun and certainly, without bullets, this weapon could be considered a club. However, another student COULD have had the bullets in his/her backpack. Who knows!

As for notifying parents about the incident, I appreciate that the school administrators and VPD spent the rest of that day and probably the next making sure that all was well at the school. This kid supposedly brought the gun to school to sell it. Did he already have a buyer? I feel sure that this is one angle that the administrators and police were working on. Isn't it possible that the school District wanted to make sure that this was an isolated incident and didn't go public with the details to make sure they had all their ducks in a row? I can only imagine that everyone involved was pretty well rattled by the whole experience. Their prime goal was to make sure that all kids were safe. Can you imagine the craziness if 2000 parents tried to pick up their kids at one time?

As for blaming the parents, who among us can say with complete certainty that our kids are perfect and wouldn't bring anything illegal to school or out into the community? This kid made a huge mistake...one that will haunt him and his family for a long, long time. There will certainly be consequences for his actions - both through the legal system and school. We should let the experts handle it.

Some of the posters here should call Bay City ISD and find out what kind of hell they have been through lately. Get your head out of the sand. Unless the parents deliberately gave their child the gun to take to school to sell, then this was all on the kid. Personally, I have always kept my guns locked in a safe. I don't think my kids know where the key is, but I'm not 100% sure. You can bet that I will be finding a new hiding place today. Do I check my safe every day to make sure everything is in place? No! But I think I will start doing that today.

Again, the real hero here is the student who reported the incident to the administrator. We may never know who you are, but you need to know that we are proud of you!

Parents must make sure students know they will be held accountable for their actions. Yes, parents need to check to see what their precious Lil child is up to. If you check their backpacks, cars or possessions you will be surprised by what they have.
Nowadays, parents are afraid of their children, so they try and become their friends and forget their responsibility as a parent.
Especially in the elementary schools, parents think the school system is a place to drop their children and let the school system be their "babysitters" they have forgotten the school system is a place of learning.

Since an unloaded gun is, at worst, a club, what are the other parents upset about? What were they going to do; take their kids out of school because some idiot had a club? There was NO threat to the safety of other students. The school officials confiscated the handgun and determined it was safe and the kid had no ammunition. The kid was arrested and removed from the school. School officials did an excellent job. Everything that should have been done was done. Walker has no reason to be "upset."

This isn't the first time a gun was brought to school in a backpack. You just weren't notified before. And what could you have done? nothing. There is not a place on earth that is safe anymore. I commend the student who turned the other student/gun in to the assistant principal. He did the right thing and all students should be encouraged to keep the schools safe by reporting weapons to administration. Encourage your child to report drugs and weapons to the authorities at once.

to the parents which got upset...what could you have done if the school notified you at point of incident? go to school and caused more confusion by wanting to check out you kid?

this kind of incident prevention begins each morning with each parent knowing and making sure you kid is fed and awake and ready for school, not ignoring what they are doing or carrying in their backpacks, cars, or bags...

if you think that is giving them freedom or if you ask or look that this invasion of privacy, then you are not doing your job as a parent...

ask your kids, look and see what they are carrying, you would be surprised...

Don't be their friend...Be their Parent, teaching and leading them so they don't make foolish mistakes...

Parents get involved with your kids and know what they are doing or better yet, what they are fixing to do.
Evidently the kids left the house with the gun...the parent knew or didn't know? What is a 15 year old doing with access to the gun?

People are all to quick to blame the school for something when the parent should be responsible for their kids actions and endangerment of others.

Get to know your kids and teach them to do what is right

If the school resource officer removed the gun from the student's backpack and the boy was arrested.
Why will he have a disciplinary hearing to determine if he did have a gun.

This is a felony charge publish the boys name.

Hope the boy made his parents proud.

I know, there's no excuse as to why the school should have to notify all the parents that one set of parent's child brought a gun to school. It's not the school's fault the child brought a gun to school. It is the school's fault that when it was reported, that they took appropriate action to insure the safety of all the students. Kudos to East High faculty, staff and administration for taking the action they did. A special thanks to the student who reported this to the school. You did the right thing.
