Victoria Police Chief Bruce Ure will be the city's next assistant city manager beginning March 1.
Current assistant city manager, Charmelle Garrett, selected Ure to take her place when she moves into the city manager position the same day.
"He's such an excellent leader and has excellent leadership skills. He's able to have a vision, communicate that vision ... and he cares about his employees." Garrett said. "He's also very passionate about Victoria's future, and so those are some of the things that I found that will make him successful in this job."
Ure said that passion is what enticed him to apply for the job.
"The economic development that's on the horizon, there's new industry coming to town, new infrastructure ... these are all issues that I am and have been very interested in," Ure said. "And to be part of the team that addresses them is really an honor."
Garrett said she received nearly 100 applications for the position, which the city established 37 years ago.
"As I went through the process, I was able to look at internal compared to external candidates," she said. "I just decided that an internal candidate provided what I was looking for as the next assistant."
Ure is temporarily handling the administrative duties as Victoria Fire Chief until a replacement for Vance Riley, who retired in December, can be found.
"We're actively looking for a fire chief, and Bruce will continue to help run the day-to-day operations," Garrett said. "We will probably sit down next week and decide on the recruitment strategy on the police chief," Garrett said.
Ure was already on the same page.
"We're going to sit down and plan a comprehensive transition for these positions because they're clearly key positions in city government," he said.
After more than 30 years in law enforcement, Ure will now assume direct responsibility for some of the city's 12 departments, which could include the police and fire departments.
"That would be a natural (choice), but he and I need to talk about which departments," Garrett said.
Ure said parts of the job will be uncharted waters for him, but that he's been "blessed" to work beside the department heads for whom he will now be responsible.
"I don't know any other way to put it other than that sounds fun and exciting," he said.
The assistant city manager position has a starting salary of about $130,000 a year, according to a city press release.

Like I always say "a bureaucrat is just a bureaucrat, even it's the police." They exist for one reason. To consume more and more and more of taxpayers money.
Since he's so super, why not let him serve in all three roles while the budget issues are worked out?
January 31, 2011 at 5:31 p.m.What!!! Come on Victoria - stop hiring from within and give other people a chance. Another one bites the dust..........
January 28, 2011 at 3:21 p.m.So, are you saying the city could just get a Ronald McDonald statue to replace him?
January 28, 2011 at 12:06 p.m.At this point in time, this Police Department needs a strong chief who has actually worked the street and investigated crimes in a larger venue. That type of individual will not be hired though...because the city administration will want another "yes" man who the city manager can control.
January 28, 2011 at 11:58 a.m.Chief Ure is not a good ole boy. I wonder if you really know the man, you are posting about or only base your opinion on heresay. He is top notch and I actually know him, and what he stands for.
January 28, 2011 at 10:35 a.m.My vote is for Guerra or Wallace to have a shot at Chief. Congrats to Chief Ure, you will be missed.
January 28, 2011 at 10:28 a.m.Charmelle, we also need another Dog Catcher.
January 28, 2011 at 10:14 a.m.Beakus
I join the military and retired after 25 years. I enjoy "MY" haircut short, high and tight. I know Mr Tyler was in a Air Borne Regiment i am pretty sure he like the hair cut then and now. You ought to pick on the the generation that never once put on the uniform and yet they were their hair short because it make them look (cough) uhh, tough.
Retired

Is this an increase in salary for Ure? If so,the pay scales are way out of kilter. I think that the COP is a more important position. Just my USD $.02
January 28, 2011 at 8:22 a.m.There goes the Good Ole' Boy system........come on, there has to be a better canidate than Ure........guess the system won't change in this backward town.
January 28, 2011 at 7:26 a.m.interesting, very interesting?
January 27, 2011 at 10:31 p.m.8 minutes since I posted my speculation and it was right.
January 27, 2011 at 6:03 p.m.KAVU just reported the search is on for not only a new fire chief, but also a new police chief.
January 27, 2011 at 6:01 p.m.Not a new administrative position exactly, there has always been a assistant city manager. But one whose main purpose is the VPD and VFD.
January 27, 2011 at 5:58 p.m.Almost the same position Ure held in Watauga, except he was called the Director of Public Safety. He has done the job before and is qualified.
The only thing I wonder about, is that now the COV will not only be looking for a new fire chief, but also a new chief of police. In other words a new administrative position might have been created by the COV.
January 27, 2011 at 5:54 p.m.@ GOP_LoveChild, just getting his ducks inline...Just wait till next election...now were we really surprised about this?
January 27, 2011 at 5:39 p.m.I bet he really wishes he could be appointed DA.
January 27, 2011 at 5:24 p.m.I bet our DA, the guy with the 1955 model flat top, didn't realize old Bruce has a big "S" on his T-shirt under that there uniform.
