PORT LAVACA - For the next week, a yellow and white striped tent will be the most colorful church on West Austin Street.
The Fellowship of Churches kicked off its 19th Annual City-wide Tent Revival on Sunday night to an excited crowd of dedicated and new followers of Christ.
A cool evening breeze blew through the outdoor church as national evangelist, the Rev. Rod Vincent, gave a motivational sermon about revitalizing and renewing followers of God.
"How many of you can say tonight, 'I am not ashamed of the Gospel,'" Vincent, 57, shouted with powerful ministerial cadence.
Vincent encouraged the group to walk boldly with God and believe in His abilities to strengthen weak followers.
"The Christian Church has gone from being a battle ship to a cruise ship," he said.
During the service, Vincent asked the youth in the crowd to come to front of the tent, where they were joined by their parents who laid hands on them to pray.
"This is not the church of the tomorrow, this is the church of today," Vincent said, pointing at the children and young adults.
'Praise you Jesus," and "Thank you Jesus" could be heard from the audience as Vincent prayed over the group.
D.J. Williams, a Mt. Sinai Baptist Church deacon, and Tent Revival Committee chairman, said the revival will have a different focus every night - Sunday and Monday will focus on youth - and feature an eclectic fusion of worship leaders and guest speakers until Saturday.
"This event is really about bringing unity among the churches and having them work together to spread the Gospel," Williams said.
When asked why the weeklong revival is held under a tent, Williams said, "Because there are people that come out here under the tent that won't go in a church. And there's a thing about going back to the old way of evangelizing. Tent revivals aren't as popular as they used to be. But we've been here about 16 years in this location."
The tent revival is open to the community, Williams said. Vincent will be the lead speaker until Friday.
