July 11, 2011 at 2:11 a.m.

The treasurer of the Calhoun County Youth Rodeo Association has been indicted for appropriating funds from the nonprofit organization, a second-degree felony.

Nan Canion, the treasurer of the association, was indicted by a Calhoun County Grand Jury on June 16.

The Calhoun County resident was charged with unlawfully appropriating funds between $20,000 and $100,000 from a nonprofit organization from January 2009 to November 2010.

A spokesperson with the Calhoun County Youth Rodeo Association confirmed that more than $50,000 was missing. The spokesperson, who declined to be named, said the missing funds were detected via tax forms. Canion worked as a volunteer with the organization for more than 15 years, the spokesperson said.

Canion turned herself in on June 25, Calhoun County District Attorney Dan Heard said. Canion waived arraignment during her June 30 hearing and is out of jail on a $40,000 bond.

Her next court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 1, Heard said.

If convicted, she faces between two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
