One person is dead after a two-vehicle wreck on Loop 463 (also U.S. Highway 77 North) about 100 yards north of Old Goliad Road, Monday afternoon.

A 2012 white Mazda5 was on the shoulder of the northbound lanes when the driver, 64-year-old Jerry William Cole, of Victoria, attempted to make a U-turn at about 4:30 p.m.

A Chevrolet truck with an attached gooseneck flatbed trailer following behind, hit the Mazda, spinning it 180 degrees, said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Gerald Bryant.

The truck then flipped onto its side, crossed the southbound lanes, went into a ditch, struck a tree and burst into flames, Bryant said.

The man in the truck died, and troopers knew little of the deceased's identity and the vehicle, which were burned beyond recognition.

"He was not from the Victoria area," Bryant said.

The flatbed trailer appeared unloaded, Bryant added.

Cole was transported by ambulance to Citizens Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.

The truck fire also burned four acres of land and came close to a manufactured home, but the Victoria Fire Department and Quail Creek Volunteer Fire Department were able to control and put out the blaze, Bryant said.

Traffic going north and south on at the scene was at a halt for about half an hour until DPS troopers and the Victoria County Sheriff's Office could at least open one lane to ease traffic congestion.

Justice of the Peace Stuart Posey pronounced the man dead, and an autopsy was ordered.

  • I also pray for the families of those involved in the recent accidents in town the past two days..
Please look at this site as far as raising the speed limits..http://gorvtexas.com/speed.htm
They (the state) understand the concerns of the speed increase and have studies to prove that it "should not" impact the safety issue. It will only affect a small percentage of very rural areas in west Texas.

  • There are to many young people having wrecks and passing these days. My heart goes out to the families of all involved. Yet the state wants to increase the speed limit. Maybe we should rethink that. May God Bless the Families involved.

  • My sympathies to Mr. Morriss' family.

  • The unidentified man's name is Robert Morriss, 28, from Lampasas, currently living in Salado with his wife and 4-year-old son. He worked for a family friend in Lampasas and was on his way home to his wife and child from a work trip. There is an extremely wonderful family in need of prayers.
