DETROIT (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder says Michigan must do more to attract and keep immigrants to improve Michigan's economy.

Speaking Monday at an immigration conference at Wayne State University, the governor pointed out that many major Michigan-based companies were started by immigrants. Among them are Meijer Inc., Masco and Dow Chemical Co.

The former computer executive says immigrants are job creators, "and we should be embracing that."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg participated in a video conference call during the opening panel entitled "Can Immigrants Save Detroit?"

Bloomberg suggested in May on NBC-TV's "Meet the Press" that letting anyone immigrate to the United States "as long as they agreed to go to Detroit and live there for five or ten years" could help the city regain population and new businesses.
