A 19-year-old man was found dead of a gunshot wound early Saturday morning.
Trent Farnsworth, a Calhoun County resident, was found dead in a field off Farm-to-Market Road 2235 near state Highway 35 just outside Port Lavaca, Lt. Mike Kovarek of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office said.
Farnsworth's family had received messages from him that led them to be concerned for his safety, Kovarek said.
Farnsworth apparently drove a utility vehicle into the field and shot himself, Kovarek said.
The body was found between midnight and 1 a.m. Saturday. It is believed the wound was self-inflicted, Kovarek said. The body was sent to Austin for an autopsy.
Kovarek said the investigation is ongoing.
"To us it appears to be a suicide, but until you do a thorough investigation you don't want to rule out anything," he said.
